(ASBURY PARK, NJ) — Fresh off a headlining slot at the Stone Pony, Turtle Soup and the Souper Groove All-Stars are planning a FREE 4+ hour show immediately following the St. Patrick’s Day Parade at House of Independents on Cookman Avenue on March 13 at 2:00pm. Led by music producer Jeff “Mudd” Mahajan, Turtle Soup and the Souper Groove All-Stars are known for keeping the hits coming non-stop, but also jamming out originals as well, which helps keep their sound fresh and distinct from any other band.
“Since it’s St. Patrick’s Day party, we’re going to throw a nod to one of my favorite Irish soul bands, The Commitments,” said Mahajan. “The setlist that we have planned goes from soul to funk to rock, and every song is just as good as the other. The cast is really stunning, with artists like Audrey Kate-Geiger, Angel Eduardo, Mike Montrey, Randy Preston, Dave Brumberg, Andy Feldman, Waiting on Mongo, DAB5, and many more, plus surprise guests we can’t announce yet. We have over 30 musicians and singers ready to perform all day.”
Their first show of the year was to a near-capacity crowd at House of Independents and included songs from Rolling Stones, Phish, Bruce Springsteen, Lettuce, Stevie Wonder,Turtle Soup, Tony Tedesco and more. Local legends Eric Safka (Matt O’Ree Band), Sandy Mack (Dead On Live) jammed with up-and-coming stars such as Nik Greeley and Karlee Bloom. One of the many memorable moments was when Ron Santee (The Battery Electric) sang “Freebird” as Mahajan (Turtle Soup) took the rousing guitar solo from on top of the drum risers.
Souper Groove All-Stars lineups have included members and former members of: Steely Dan, James Brown, The Pretenders, Blondie, Steve Vai, Joe Cocker, Screaming Headless Torsos, RAQ, Kung Fu, Splintered Sunlight, Juggling Suns, Solar Circus, Turtle Soup, Dead On Live, Mack & Friends, The Brummy Brothers, Natural Breakdown, Karmic Juggernaut, Remember Jones, UFOTOFU, DAB5, Tony Tedesco & Full Fathom 5, The Union, Downstream, Waiting on Mongo, and many more.

Dear Friends, beloved Turtle Soup manager and Souper Groove ringmaster / MC Barry Cohen has passed away. We are extremely sad but are going to play tonight’s show better than ever, as it will be dedicated to him. We’ll raise a glass to the man who’s made us all laugh and love music even more. We love you Barry Cohen, RIP.
The Claddagh was rocking last night with the Souper Groove All-Stars! Featuring sit-ins by Tim McCullion of Tympanic Plexus on keys, adding luscious synth layers to Turtle Soup classics “Changin”, “Baby Don’t”, “Alive”, and “Automatic Trance Mission” while Dave “D-Kru” Krukowski’s rapping on “Huego Latino”, brought the slow middle section to a heated, hip-hop frenzy.
The All-Stars paid tribute to the Anniversary of Jimi Hendrix’s “Purple Haze” and also covered “Fool” by Donovan Frankenreiter, “Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen” by Santana and “Send Me on My Way” by Rusted Root. Turtle Soup’s Sean Dodds gets a bid for multi-instrumentalist as he started the night on vocals for “Fool” then transitioned to keys for a few songs, jumped on acoustic guitar for “Send Me on My Way” and back on keys for a fiery “Liquid, I Said” solo. Ben Feld took vocals for many songs and a behind-the-back keyboard solo on “Automatic Trance Mission”.
The Turtle Soup section was on fire as usual. Andy Meyer on drums and “Dark” Mark Nettelingham on percussion take the groove to a whole new level, while adding Michael “The Derminator” McDermott’s thunderous bass lines reminds us of why Turtle Soup is a 5x Asbury Music Award Winner for Top Groove Band and Top Jam Band. Andy Feldman on keys and Jeff “Mudd” Mahajan on guitar took several rousing solos that lit up the entire room, including a quote from the epic Star Wars theme in mid-shred. The All-Stars crushed “For Once” and their theme song “We’ve Got Each Other” before ending the night.
The next Souper Groove All-Stars performance is Friday, November 8 at House of Independents in Asbury Park, NJ. Free Admission. Not to be missed, as we have a full night of music planned, with 3 drum risers, Phish and Lettuce covers, sit-ins from Rock and Roll Hall of Famers and much more!
